Khanderao Holkar was a Maratha prince who was born in 1723. He was the eldest son of Malharrao Holkar, the ruler of Indore. Khanderao Holkar was married to Ahilyabai Holkar, who later became famous for her governance and philanthropy.
In 1754, Khanderao Holkar was killed in the battle of Kumbher, which was fought between the Maratha Empire and the forces of Ahmed Shah Abdali, the King of Afghanistan. Khanderao Holkar was leading the Maratha forces in the battle, and he was hit by a bullet which proved to be fatal.
There are different accounts of how Khanderao Holkar died. According to some sources, he was killed by one of his own soldiers, who was hired by Raghoba, the brother of the former Peshwa of the Maratha Empire. However, other sources claim that he was killed by a sniper from the enemy forces.
The death of Khanderao Holkar was a significant blow to the Maratha Empire, and it marked the beginning of the decline of Holkar Dynasty. After his death, his wife Ahilyabai Holkar took over the reins of the state and proved to be an able ruler.
